Motherwell Local Outcome Improvement Plan highlights

Motherwell and Bellshill Training Programme - Health Issues in the Local Community

Two training sessions delivered on March 25 and 26, 2025 focusing on Health Issues in the Local Community(HILC). This was focused on Community Engagement, Tackling Poverty and Mental Health.

How did it come about?

These training courses were identified as a need within Motherwell and Bellshill through discussions with Local Outcome Improvement Plan Sub Groups. Participants of the courses were identified through the local sub groups and spaces were prioritised for groups/organisations who deliver projects in the Motherwell and Bellshill areas.

What was the outcome?

We delivered a commissioned Health Issues in The Community (HIIC) tutor training course to 11 participants between Motherwell and Bellshill areas.

The 2-day HIIC tutor training course is a SCQF credit rated course, 8 points at level 7, and aims to equip participants to deliver Health Issues in the Community training to a wide variety of people in a broad range of settings.

This course will enable the participants to deliver the HIIC course for participants within the Motherwell and Bellshill area going forward so keep an eye out for courses in the future.

This work contributes to LOIP Priorities:

Tackling Poverty

The learning from this course focuses on Poverty and Inequalities. Delivering this training for trainers has given 11 participants the tools and knowledge to facilitate engaging sessions with local communities around this priority.

Community Engagement

The core learning from this course is around Community Development approaches, Community Capacity Building and Community Engagement. This course gave the new trainers the tools and knowledge to facilitate these sessions with communities.

Mental Health

Another key part of this course is looking more in depth about Health in general which brings in Mental Health. In every aspect of this course it encourages participants to think about health differently and what causes good and bad health using a social model of health and other key ideas about health and explain how these models/ ideas relate to their own lives and communities.

Environment

While looking at the social model of health the tutors encourage participants focus on their own communities and environments. Taking into consideration green spaces, pollution etc.
