NL Leadership Academy

Who are we?

We are NL schools' leadership academy programme.

What do we do?

We aim to develop confidence in young people, inspiring them to lead sessions with peers and in local primary schools in areas of the curriculum they have a particular interest or aptitude in.

What is our session about?

Creative arts

Ever wanted to put your creative talents to good use? Have you thought about becoming a music, drama or art teacher? Or even just wondered what type of career the arts can get you? Our Creative arts leadership academy focuses on developing your confidence and facilitation skills. You will learn how to plan, risk assess and facilitate a lesson in your own chosen art form - and have fun doing it!

Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM)

As part of Future Fridays we are looking to attract S5 and S6 pupils with an interest in science to take part in the SQA accredited Young STEM Leader Programme. You will develop important leadership, communication, and employability skills through developing and delivering exciting science activities for pupils and teachers in local primary schools.

Dance

Just dance, it’ll be okay! Our Dance leadership academy will train you up on the best way to lead a dance class. Warm-ups, games, routines and more. Perfect for those who want to someday open their own dance school, be a dance teacher or just have some fun whilst developing their confidence.

Digital

Young people will take a leading role in delivering digital literacy and computing science skills to pupils across their cluster primaries. They will prepare to carry out these activities by considering the factors involved such as resources required, people involved, time and potential risks.

Digital leaders will then look to support their cluster schools by delivering a block of digital lessons, focusing on programming languages such as Scratch and Python as well as touching on the world of cyber resilience and internet safety.

Enterprise

The Leadership in Enterprise programme provides senior pupils the opportunity to explore new business ideas and build upon their teamwork, communication, and leadership skills. Working as teams, students will flex their creative muscles by combining a “Thing” (e.g. a plant pot, pencil, car) with a “Theme” (e.g., politics, green energy, weather) to create a new business product or service that would benefit the world.

Teams will then have the opportunity to pitch their business idea. The activity will challenge students on their teamworking, adaptability, problem-solving, and creativity skills whilst informing them of the various aspects of business and entrepreneurship. Pupils can put what they have learnt into practice, delivering sessions and enhancing confidence.

Sport

If you are considering in a career in sport, such as a sports coach or PE teacher then the sports leadership academy is for you. This programme will provide you with the skills required to prepare, deliver and evaluate a variety of sport sessions. You’ll also have the opportunity to develop a range of transferable skills such as communication, decision making and people skills. You’ll have access to a range of coach education courses and further training and will be supported throughout by an Active Schools Coordinator.

Mindset and wellbeing

Sign up if you want to build confidence, believe in yourself and inspire others. Develop skills that will help you achieve your goals and overcome challenges. Learn to inspire and support the primary school pupils you’re visiting. Prepare yourself to lead in life.

What will you gain from attending?

Not only will pupils enhance their confidence and leadership skills, as well as many more, but they will, on completion of tasks, be able to obtain a Level 5 (National 5) or Level 6 ( Higher) group award for their work.
