We are investing in connecting North Lanarkshire.
Our vision is to improve the connectivity to and between North Lanarkshire's places and spaces.
We are making our communities and facilities more accessible and improving connections between:
- communities
- education
- job and training opportunities
- leisure facilities
- greenspaces
- local services
To do this we are investing in our:
- new roads to improve local road networks
- public transport facilities
- active travel network
Through Glasgow City Region City Deal infrastructure investment we are investing in new roads, public transport facilities and active travel routes at Gartcosh/Glenboig Community Growth Area, the A8/M8 Corridor and between the M74 and M8 through our ambitious Pan Lanarkshire Orbital Transport Corridor project. This will enable the regeneration of Ravenscraig and the development of the East Airdrie Link Road to achieve wider economic, social and environmental benefits across North Lanarkshire.
Through City Deal funding we are creating:
- new roads
- cycling and walking routes
- improving public transport facilities
This will:
- create economic growth and jobs
- unlock places where development has slowed down
- improve access to jobs, education and training opportunities
As part of our Economic Regeneration Delivery Plan and the work of our Infrastructure and Transportation Service, we are:
- improving local roads and junctions
- improving public transport infrastructure
- delivering active travel route improvements
The Active Travel Strategy aims to create a wide range of connections across North Lanarkshire that can be used for everyday journeys such as travelling for:
- employment
- education
- meeting essential needs
- recreation
There is more information available on projects and proposals that are connecting places in the Motherwell Board area.
New roads
- Ravenscraig Access Infrastructure (RAI) South – City Deal funding is creating strategic transport infrastructure that is essential to develop Ravenscraig. A new road is being created from Windmillhill Street /Airbles Road to the heart of Ravenscraig at the Regional Sports Facility. Part of the project will involve improving Airbles Road where it meets with Hamilton Road
- Ravenscraig Access Infrastructure (RAI) North – City Deal finding is providing transport infrastructure improvements for Ravenscraig on the existing A723/B799. This is being upgraded to a dual carriageway for three kilometres from the north edge of Ravenscraig to north to the M8, at Holytown.
New public transport infrastructure
- Motherwell Station and Muir Street – City Deal funding created the recently completed improvements on Muir Street and new drop-off facility at the station. This was part of a larger project to improve Motherwell Rail Station which has helped increase the role of the station as a key transport hub.
New active travel
- RAI (South) Active Travel – City Deal funding is also providing pedestrian and cycle paths along the route of the new road to complement what has already been provided in Ravenscraig.
- RAI (North) Active Travel – City Deal finding is enabling new active travel provision to be provided as well as upgrading the existing road.
- Motherwell Station Active Travel links - We are improving routes for pedestrians and cyclists in and around Motherwell by providing new and improved shared paths for walking, wheeling and cycling and improved road crossings.
- Ravenscraig Active Travel Links – We have recently finished work to create a new walking, wheeling and cycling link, connecting Ravenscraig with Craigneuk and improving links to existing facilities within Ravenscraig.
