Community food growing and allotments

Food growing strategy

Part 9, section 119 of the Community Empowerment (Scotland) Act 2015, places a duty on every local authority to produce a food growing strategy.

In 2019 we worked with Greenspace Scotland to gather information for the strategy and to deliver and report on consultation events with local community groups with an interest in food growing activities. Further feedback to help develop the strategy was collected from an online survey.

This feedback allowed actions to be created for the strategy that would help to deliver the vision and strategic outcomes of the plan.

Food growing strategy 2021 - 2025

The strategy aims to increase access to affordable, healthy, sustainable food by increasing opportunities for all residents.

The strategy is a five-year plan which sets out our approach to encourage, support, and promote new and existing growing spaces in order to help achieve the food growing aspirations of our residents and meet local demand and needs.

The strategy will also help to identify the process by which land with potential suitability for food growing can be taken forward and demonstrates the range of food-growing opportunities that are available for communities and individuals.

The North Lanarkshire Food Strategy will be reviewed in Autumn 2025.
