Active NL facilities

The review of Active NL facilities took into account a range of criteria such as footfall, usage, condition and money expected to be required in coming years to maintain facilities.

Building condition is a critical factor in considering the overall estate. Taking into account the need to ensure a balanced provision across the authority, 12 sport and leisure facilities are in scope to be considered for closure.

Where well-used outdoor pitches are attached to these facilities, consideration would be given to keeping these in place (for example, the recently-developed 3G pitch at Keir Hardie Sports Centre).

It was agreed that the following facilities will close:

Aquatec, Motherwell Pool cannot be brought back into use at an acceptable cost
Old Daisy Park Centre, Motherwell Not economically viable. Opportunity exists for current community use to transfer to alternative location
Keir Hardie Sports Centre, Holytown Low footfall and significant investment required. Proposed to retain outdoor 3G pitch
Kilsyth Pool, Kilsyth Significant refurbishment required within 3 to 5 years
Iain Nicolson Centre, Chryston Low footfall, possible integration to new Chryston Hub
Palacerigg Golf Course, Cumbernauld 21% year-on-year decline in usage
John Smith Pool, Airdrie Significant refurbishment required in next five years. However, would still be fundamental issue with design of pool tank
Coatbridge Outdoor Sports Centre/Janet Hamilton Centre OSC closed since 2019 due to fire, with Janet Hamilton Centre closed since January 2023 due to damage associated with fire.
Lochview Golf Course, Coatbridge 22% year-on-year decline in usage
Birkenshaw Sports Barn Low footfall, significant investment required
Sir Matt Busby Sports Centre, Bellshill While footfall is high, very significant refurbishment required within 3-5 years
Shotts Leisure Centre Low footfall, significant refurbishment required within 5 years
