Next steps
The conference was brought to a close with remarks from the co-chairs, expressing their commitment on behalf of the council to continue the work. The conference is only the beginning of something which requires a sustained and inclusive effort if the consequences of racism are to be overcome.
Councillor Brannan-McVey then thanked everyone for their participation and brought the conference to a close.
Post-conference evaluation
41 responses were given by participants to an online evaluation survey post-conference which consisted of four questions:
1. Did participation in the conference increase your knowledge of the ongoing work within North Lanarkshire Council around Black Lives Matter? (%)
2. Did the conference meet your expectations? (%)
3. How would you rate the conference overall?
4. As part of the evaluation of the conference delegates were asked What next steps do you think North Lanarkshire should take on its Black Lives Matter journey?
The responses were very mixed. In summary:
- build on the conference by having more events and workshops that bring people together;
- education- primary and secondary and in communities to raise awareness;
- employment – increase diversity in the workforce and in teacher recruitment; and
- engagement – continue the research and establish a wider BLM working group to involve community representatives.
