Wishaw Local Outcome Improvement Plan highlights

Branchalwood Nature Woodland Walkways

Local Development Programme funding to improve pathways throughout nature woodland walkways in Branchalwood, Coltness.

How did it come about and what did you do?

A Local Development Programme proposal application was submitted by Branchalwood Estate Community Group supported by the Community Partnership Officer, seeking support for a project to make environmental improvements to the natural heritage nature walk from the entrance at Lyman Drive.

The overall request also included a new noticeboard and nature signage which will be part of phase 2 of this project. The pathway runs through a mature, estate woodlands, which provides a home for wildlife and a host of trees and plants.

The area provides walking and leisure opportunities for the local community in a beautiful woodland setting. The Community Partnership Officer engaged and consulted with the wider community as well as meeting on site and walking with the community group.

What was the outcome?

The Branchalwood project commenced at the end of August 2024 and completed at the end of September 2024. The woodland walkway was enhanced for all through resurfacing and widening of pathways, installation of drainage to prevent wet, muddy areas, and improvement of the seated area. This provided benefits for many dog walkers, local residents, and families enjoying nature on their doorstep.

The projects aim to encourage more people from the community to walk in the park, to be closer to the natural environment and to support their overall health and wellbeing. This assists in achieving the priorities Community Engagement, Environment, and Mental Health & Wellbeing as part of Wishaw's LOIP. The photographs show the project at stages before, during and after. These illustrate the considerable improvement to the pathway in Branchalwood that has been achievable through LDP funding.
