In addition to infrastructure projects, we supported the development of MediCity through a five year funded innovation plan from 2015 to 2020.
What is MediCity?
MediCity Scotland was started to speed up the growth of existing and new Medtech companies in Scotland.
This was to close the gap in MedTech development in Scotland and the rest of the UK by using a method already used in Nottingham which saw company survival reach over 90%.
MediCity is a state-of-the-art life science incubator building and business collective. It is located within the BioCity life sciences facility run by Pioneer Group.
It’s located next to the £500 million upgraded M8 motorway connecting Edinburgh and Glasgow and Euro Central Business Park.
It was developed to provide the best place that MedTech, digital health, healthcare and wellness businesses can start and grow.
MedTech and health businesses can get:
- growth support with coaching
- investment and high-quality co-working
- laboratory and office spaces
How was MediCity funded?
The development of MediCity was completed following over £1m investment through:
- UK Department of Business Innovation Skills funding
- North Lanarkshire Council
- BioCity Group
It was completed as part of the £18 million Glasgow and Clyde Valley City Deal. Along with Scottish Enterprise, we supported the project by contributing £1.1 million.
What was provided?
The MediCity project refurbished a vacant building next to the existing BioCity site to create 11,000 sq ft of office, lab and co-working space.
What were our targets?
The five-year project was targeted to speed up the creation of around 50 new businesses and 150 jobs, while generating private investment of £5.6 million.
What was achieved?
The project supported 70 MedTech and Life Sciences businesses and created 201 highly skilled jobs. Private investment exceeded £26.2 million.
A total of 26 workshops and events were delivered over the five-year period including:
- pre-accelerator workshops
- networking events a
- seminars covering a range of business topics
Of the 70 companies supported through the 5 years,
- 68 worked with Business Gateway to seek advice and support
- 19 worked directly with Scottish Enterprise to access their account management or high-growth spin-out support
The MediCity building now forms an integral part of the BioCity Scotland Newhouse site and continues to provide bespoke facilities for MedTech and BioTech companies and current tenants include:
- Macias Sensors
- Virax Biolabs
- Sampled (Formerly Roylance Pharma)
- OracleBio
- Genetix Research
As our Medtech and Life Science Sector continues to grow in North Lanarkshire, BioCity Scotland provides a unique facility.
- BioCity provides a mix of facilities with office and start- up laboratory spaces designed to individual company needs.
- The Nowhere Café provides a modern common social area with dining area to eat locally sourced food as well as areas for holding informal meetings.
BioCity also support tenants of the MediCity building and wider BioCity centre with a range of events, workshops and accelerator programmes to support their current tenants.
