City Deal projects along the A8/M8

Improving sustainable transport links to Eurocentral

We plan to improve accessibility to jobs at key employment locations

We are aiming to improve sustainable transport links to Eurocentral, Maxim Park, Mossend and Newhouse for businesses and employees.

We will create new active travel routes to connect employment areas with surrounding local communities and local rail stations. By delivering these, we will improve the accessibility of job opportunities by train, cycling and wheeling and provide alternatives to private cars.

Thanks to funding from the Glasgow Region City Deal we can carry out design work and build the infrastructure.

What will the project provide?

  • New and improved shared paths for walking, wheeling and cycling
  • Improved pedestrian and cyclist road crossings

The work will be done in three phases.

Phase 1: Holytown and Newhouse to Eurocentral

What we have already done

In 2023 we appointed a company to look at possible links connecting Eurocentral to Holytown. We also have a design to connect Newhouse to Holytown.

What’s happening next?

We will appoint a company in Autumn 2024 to develop a detailed design for this route. This will allow us to appoint a contractor to build the route.

Phase 2: Whifflet

What we have already done

We have identified a route to connect Whifflet rail station with the existing Active Travel Link at Shawhead.

What’s happening next?

We will appoint a company in Autumn 2024 to develop a detailed design for this route. This will allow us to appoint a contractor to build the route.

Phase 3: Bellshill (North Rd) to Mossend via Bellshill town centre

What we have already done

We have identified options for this route, but need to do further work to make sure it can be built.

What’s happening next?

We will appoint a company in Autumn 2024 to find the best way to build this route.

We recommend you sign up to our email alerts as the best way to keep up-to-date on the project.

What's happening next?

After we appoint the consultants to prepare the designs, we will work with partners and stakeholders and carry out public consultation during the design process.

How we got the funding

At the end of August 2022, the Outline Business Case for the A8/M8 Corridor Access Improvements project was approved by Glasgow City Region City Deal Cabinet. This included the sustainable transport improvements and enables us to develop and design our proposals.

This was a key stage in making sure the funding from the City Deal Infrastructure Fund is provided for the project.
