Two outstanding young people helped save the life of a man and his pet dog after an incident at the Monkland Canal in Coatbridge in December.
A special event was held at Coatbridge Fire Station to recognise the vital intervention of Emily Deas and Lauren Campbell who came to the aid of a man who had fallen through the ice and was in very serious danger. Special commendation was given by North Lanarkshire Provost Kenneth Duffy, Scottish Fire and Rescue and the Royal Life Saving Society.
The incident occurred on 16 December when a man was walking his dog along the canal near to Blair Road at King Street, when the dog ran on the ice, fell through and entered the water. The member of the public went onto the ice and tried to rescue his dog, resulting in him becoming a casualty at the same time.
The St Ambrose HS pupils heard cries for help coming from the canal and they rushed to help and immediately called the emergency services. They also managed to successfully rescue the dog from the canal.
Provost Duffy said: “The quick and decisive actions of these two young heroes helped save the gentleman’s life and that of his pet. They didn’t panic and took the correct actions to help prevent a potential tragedy.
“On behalf of North Lanarkshire Council, I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to both these girls for their bravery and quick thinking. They are a credit to their families and the local community.”
Jim Quinn, Local Senior Officer with Scottish Fire and Rescue said: “On behalf of the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, I was extremely proud to present both Lauren and Emily with these letters of commendation.
"Calling 999, remaining calm and leading fire crews to the incident undoubtedly helped save a life. Their quick thinking and courage is an inspiration to us all.”
