Construction has officially started on the new Gartcosh Community Hub, a major project set to provide new education and community facilities for the area.
The hub aims to create a modern, sustainable space that meets the needs of both the school and the wider Gartcosh community.
At an event to mark the occasion, Councillor Michael McBride, Convener of Education, Children and Families, cut the first turf, signalling the beginning of work on the site.
“This new community hub represents a significant investment in the future of Gartcosh,” he said. “It will provide a modern, inclusive learning environment for local children while offering fantastic facilities for the wider community.
“We are committed to delivering high-quality community and learning spaces to serve future generations.”
The development will include a new Gartcosh Primary School, a nursery class, and a specialist language and communication support centre.
There will also be flexible community spaces, modern indoor and outdoor sports facilities and landscaped playgrounds.
The Gartcosh project is part of a broader investment in North Lanarkshire, with five similar projects now in or close to construction – representing an investment of over £160million.
Councillor Jim Logue, Leader of North Lanarkshire Council, highlighted the scale of ongoing developments: “This multi-million-pound construction development is one of several exciting projects currently underway.
“These include Orbiston Community Hub in Bellshill, St Kevin’s Community Hub in Bargeddie, St Stephen’s Community Hub in Coatbridge, the extension to Chryston High School and now the new Gartcosh Community Hub.
“They represent the biggest investment in infrastructure across North Lanarkshire. They are also at the heart of our towns and communities.
“And these projects reflect our ambition and aspiration to develop a modern education provision for all our young people.”
In addition, it was agreed at last week’s council meeting that three new community hubs will be built.
The new hubs, which will include state-of-the-art primary schools, will be built in Glenboig, Ravenscraig, and Cumbernauld’s Abronhill.
Planning permission for the Gartcosh Community Hub was granted in April 2024. Hub South West appointed BAM Construction as the main contractor.
Michael Ross, CEO of Hub South West, said: "Breaking ground on the new hub marks an exciting milestone in our partnership with North Lanarkshire Council, BAM Construction, and our local supply chain.
“By working with local businesses and tradespeople, we ensure that the economic benefits stay within Lanarkshire, supporting jobs, apprenticeships, and skills development.
“This approach strengthens the local supply chain, helping SMEs grow and creating sustainable employment opportunities.
“Gartcosh Community Hub will not only provide an inspiring space for young people to learn and thrive but will also act as a cornerstone for community cohesion and economic growth in the region.”
Jim Ward, Regional Director of BAM Construction Ltd, said: “We are delighted to continue our valued relationship with NLC and Hub SW to construct the new Gartcosh Community Hub.
“We look forward to delivering a first-class facility for the local community, and during the construction phase, we will continue to support the local community through our Social Value activities and leave a positive, lasting legacy for the community.”
The project’s design team includes architects BDP, civil and structural engineers Blyth & Blyth, and mechanical and electrical engineers Hulley & Kirkwood.
