A call has been issued for people to nominate their sporting heroes to join the illustrious list of inductees in North Lanarkshire Council's sporting hall of fame at Ravenscraig's Regional Sports Facility.

The 29-member list includes sporting legends such as the Lisbon Lions, John Higgins, Louise and Kimberly Renicks, and Sir Matt Busby.

The council is calling for fresh nominations to be considered for inclusion next year.

Councillor Jim Logue, Leader of North Lanarkshire Council, said: "In 2017 we became the first local authority to celebrate the sporting achievements of people from our area by creating the sporting hall of fame.

"Now, after a break of a few years, we're asking for people to let us know who their local sporting heroes are and help shine a light on the incredible stories that inspire us all.

"The initiative is a great way of honouring North Lanarkshire's rich sporting heritage and encouraging future generations to chase their dreams."

"We're looking for individuals from all sporting backgrounds who have either competed at the highest level – nationally or internationally - or contributed significantly to their sport, whether in a coaching, leadership, or support role."

To nominate your sporting hero:

1. Submit a brief description of their achievements.

2. Include why you believe they should be inducted into the Hall of Fame.

3. Email your nomination by Thursday 12 December to sporthof@northlan.gov.uk

The inaugural event took place in 2017 and saw 12 greats inducted. These included Sir Matt Busby (football), David Crabb (swimming), Louise and Kimberly Renicks (judo), Sandy Jones (golf), John Higgins (snooker), Lynn Mccafferty (handball), Budhi Kunderan (cricket), Lisbon Lions (football), Angela Robertson (swimming), Jonathan Paterson (football), Ricky Burns (boxing) and Tom McKean (athletics).

The following year, inductees included world boxing champion Pat Clinton, footballer Pauline Hamill, and Paralympian Michael Kerr.

In 2019, world champion bowler Caroline Brown, UEFA super cup winner Gary McAllister, boxing world champion Walter McGowan, and champion swimmer Nancy Riach were all added.

A judging panel will meet later this year to decide which nominations will join this incredible list of local sporting greats.
