A series of temporary road restrictions will be in place on Brownsburn Road, Petersburn Road and the A73 Carlisle Road in Airdrie over three weekends this month.
The restrictions are required to facilitate the road surfacing and marking installation as part of the junction improvement works being carried out by the council, in partnership with Strathclyde Partnership for Transport.
The new junction layout was developed following a feasibility study to assess traffic impacts, pedestrian connectivity, road safety and engineering requirements. The works will help to improve the efficiency and safety of the road network in the area.
The following restrictions will be in place during each weekend closure:
Weekend 1 – from 6.00pm Friday 11 August until 6.00am Monday 14 August
- Brownsburn Road will be closed from the A73 Carlisle Road, south westwards to Etive Drive.
- A73 Carlisle Road will have temporary traffic management until 1.00pm Saturday 12 August.
- A73 Carlisle Road will have temporary traffic management reinstated from 6.00am on Sunday 13 August.
Weekend 2 – from 6.00pm Friday 18 August until 6.00am Monday 21 August
- Brownsburn Road will be closed from the A73 Carlisle Road, south westwards to Etive Drive.
- Petersburn Road will be closed from the A73 Carlisle Road, north eastwards to Minch Way.
- A73 Carlisle Road will have a speed restriction and will operate under convoy traffic control from a point 150m north of Petersburn Road, to a point 150m south of Brownsburn Road.
Weekend 3 – from 6.00pm Friday 25 August until 6.00am Monday 28 August
- Brownsburn Road will be closed from the A73 Carlisle Road, south westwards to Etive Drive.
- Petersburn Road will be closed from the A73 Carlisle Road, north eastwards to Minch Way.
- A73 Carlisle Road will have a speed restriction and will operate under convoy traffic control from a point 150m north of Petersburn Road, to a point 150m south of Brownsburn Road.
Signed diversion routes will be in place to maintain local access to residents and businesses during these closures.
The temporary speed limit restriction on the A73 Carlisle Road during the second and third weekend closures will allow for traffic to travel on this road, via convoy traffic control, thus avoiding a full closure. Temporary traffic signals will also be in operation to manage these temporary restrictions and provide a safe working zone for the contractor and public.
The temporary traffic management on the A73 Carlisle Road will be removed at 1.00pm on Saturday 12 August to minimise disruption and congestion when the Airdrieonians football match is played at the Excelsior stadium. This will enable unrestricted north and southbound travel movements on the A73 Carlisle Road from 1.00pm on Saturday until 6.00am on Sunday 13 August.
The full junction improvement work is planned to be complete by 15 September. This will deliver:
- a new mini roundabout on Carlisle Road at the Petersburn Road junction;
- a new puffin crossing on Carlisle Road, south of Brownsburn Road;
- footway and carriageway resurfacing at Carlisle Road, Petersburn Road and Brownsburn Road junctions;
- utility diversion and protection works; and
- street lighting upgrades.
A letter has been sent to properties in the surrounding area informing them of the weekend traffic restrictions.
