May is National Walking month. Walking is a great way to become more active as it is free, low impact, requires no special equipment, and pace and distance can easily be increased.

It suits people of all ages and abilities and is also a handy way to keep exercise levels topped up for people with busy lives. Just walk out of your front door and you are on your way!

The benefits of walking for health and wellbeing are extensive. It’s good for heart and lungs, bones and muscles, strength and balance. It improves mood, reduces stress and leads to better sleep. It is very sociable too: walking and talking at the same time go together very well!

Get Walking Lanarkshire organises a programme of free health walks across North and South Lanarkshire. The weekly walks are easy, last no longer than an hour and go at a gentle pace.

The walks are suitable for all ages and abilities and are particularly suitable for people who are looking to become a bit more active.

The walks are very friendly and most groups go to a café after the walk for a cuppa and a chat. If you’d like to come along, please book for your first walk.

If you’d like to help others to become more active, then why not become a volunteer health walk leader? No previous experience is required, just a friendly nature and enthusiasm for walking. Free training will be provided.

To book for your first walk or to enquire about volunteering contact: getwalkinglanarkshire@northlan.gov.uk/ 07903 358424.
