A local history project seeks community volunteers to help bring the story of Cumbernauld New Town to life.
The “A Town for Tomorrow - Revealing the Records of the Cumbernauld Development Corporation” project would like to hear from people with a keen interest in history to help catalogue the corporation's work.
Thanks to a £34,000 Archives Revealed grant, the project has employed a dedicated archivist to catalogue an extensive collection of documents from the Cumbernauld Development Corporation.
This collection includes minutes, reports, photographs, and architectural drawings that detail the creation and administration of Cumbernauld New Town.
Heather Liddle, Active & Creative Communities Manager at North Lanarkshire Council, said: “Cataloguing and preserving this collection will provide valuable insights into the work of the Cumbernauld Development Corporation.
“This project will make the cultural, architectural, environmental, educational, and social aspects of Cumbernauld New Town accessible to a wide audience.”
Project Archivist Carly Davidson added: “Joining our project will allow volunteers to learn new skills, be part of their community, meet new people, and help educate and inspire others. We offer flexible roles and commitment levels, and full training and support will be provided.
“Volunteers will be based at North Lanarkshire Heritage Centre in Motherwell, working on tasks such as improving record descriptions, adding context, digitising records, and basic preservation.”
The archive team will be at Cumbernauld Gala Day on Saturday, 29 June, to promote the project and engage with locals about the New Town's history and volunteer opportunities.
