Hundreds of people across North Lanarkshire have raised vital funds to support suicide prevention by taking part in a charity run and cycle event.

The virtual running and cycle event was organised by Suicide Prevention North Lanarkshire and saw 544 people of all ages and abilities running or cycling their own selected distances and contributing to the Samaritans charity. A total of £1, 174 was raised for the charity as part of the participation entry fees.

Grant Shearer, Sport Development Officer explained: “This fantastic event has really helped raise community awareness about suicide prevention and we are so grateful to all those who took part. The money raised will greatly help the outstanding work of the Samaritans charity.”

Participants who completed their chosen running or cycling distances received a medal, t-shirt and a pre-event sports goody pack which included a bag, snood and water bottle and information about suicide awareness and prevention.

Last year saw a rise in the number of suicides across North Lanarkshire with the rate amongst 15-24 year-old men in Scotland at its highest since 2007; and the rate among 25-34 year-olds at its highest rate since 2013.

Lynne MacDonald, Suicide Prevention Lead said: “It was brilliant to see so many people taking part and backing efforts to raise awareness about suicide prevention. Through our Suicide Prevention NL campaign, we are trying to reduce the terrible pain caused by suicide.

“‘Let’s Talk’ is the message we want to get across as we try to encourage people to talk more openly about suicide so we can all work together to help prevent it.”

“It is so important that we keep raising awareness about suicide prevention in our communities. The emotional impact on families, friends and communities bereaved by suicide is devastating and can have awful long-lasting effect on those left behind.”
