On Thursday 5 May people across Scotland will go to the polls to decide who represents them in all 32 councils.

Residents will elect three or four councillors to represent each of the 21 wards in North Lanarkshire.

To be able to vote in the council elections, you need to be registered. It is quick and easy to do at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote; you just need your National Insurance number, date of birth and address.

The deadline to be registered is midnight on Monday 18 April.

Young people aged 16 and 17 are eligible to vote in these elections.

“Councils deliver a large range of key local services including education, bin collections, housing, parks, business support and roads maintenance, so it is important that everyone has a say in who represents them on the council,” explains Returning Officer for North Lanarkshire Des Murray.

“Every vote matters so make sure you are registered to vote by 18 April.”

Voters have a range of options for casting their ballot – in person, by post or by appointing someone they trust to vote in their place, known as a proxy vote.

For those who choose to vote in person, polling stations will follow all public health guidance.

The deadline for applications for new postal votes, postal proxy votes and amendments to, or cancellation of, existing postal or existing proxy votes is 5pm on 20 April, and for a proxy vote the deadline is 5pm on 26 April.
