Strathclyde Park is buzzing with activity as pupils from across North Lanarkshire enjoy a raft of outdoor adventures with their classmates.
Our outdoor education programme is allowing primary, secondary and ASN pupils to take part in activities including wall climbing, watersports, cycling, orienteering, bushcraft, rowing and archery.
Over 110 schools are booked to take part in action packed outings at the park this academic year, with 93% of primary schools now participating. Investment in changing facilities, eating areas, a laundry and drying area, a pupil designed rainbow shelter and play equipment is all enhancing the experience for young people.
Angela Campbell, Convener of Education and Families explained: “The feedback we are getting from pupils, parents and teaching staff is really positive. The pupils are flourishing and learning new skills and hobbies which many have never tried before.
“Outdoor learning is vital for their development and helps improve confidence, concentration and behaviour. It also allows our young people to work together, practice teamwork and provides crucial benefits for their mental and physical health.
“Learning through play in the great outdoors feeds their imaginations and broadens their horizons and talents.
“As a council, we have committed £600,000 to ensure this opportunity is available to all our schools. We also receive financial support from Bikeability Scotland, the Pupil Equity Fund and the Strategic Equity Fund, in addition to the fantastic fundraising of schools, parents and carers, this means that every child who wants to take part gets the opportunity to participate.
“It is about making memories and learning new skills and despite ongoing cost pressures, we are determined to continue developing and enhancing this experience for our young people.”
