We are proud to announce that our programme to resettle Ukrainian families fleeing conflict has won the prestigious Local Government Chronicle (LGC) Housing Award for 2024.
We undertook the rapid refurbishment of 200 empty properties in two tower blocks, providing warm homes and essential services to around 200 Ukrainian families. This innovative approach to supporting families fleeing the Ukrainian conflict was highlighted by the LGC for its swift, compassionate, and effective response.
Stephen Llewellyn, Chief Officer (Housing), explained: "This award recognises our compassionate approach in supporting those in desperate need. This project not only provided homes but also helped create a sense of stability and belonging for the families in our communities.
“Our resettlement team has played a crucial role in aiding over 550 Ukrainian Displaced People, providing support in various areas including employability and health access. This initiative has allowed families to integrate into existing communities while establishing their own identity within their new towns.”
With support funding from the Scottish Government, the refurbishment of Birkshaw Tower in Wishaw and High Coats in Coatbridge provided a cost-effective alternative to hotel accommodation, ensuring families had fully furnished homes ready for immediate move-in.
