A record number of people living in North Lanarkshire have been supported by the council’s tackling poverty team - and other services - to secure the benefits to which they are entitled.

In 2023/24, the additional benefit income generated for residents increased by 35.1%, with just under £48million secured through claims and appeals.

The team dealt with around 1180 people per month, with residents contacting them directly through the dedicated telephone number or email.

Other referrals came from councillors, MSP’s/MP’s, NHS Lanarkshire and council services such as social work, education and housing.

“I’d like to thank and congratulate everyone involved on what they have achieved and for making such a positive difference to the lives of thousands of people and families across North Lanarkshire,” said Councillor Chris Costello, Convener of the Wellbeing and Tackling Poverty Committee.

“It’s a real team approach and includes staff from our social work and housing teams, welfare rights and debt advisers, Macmillan Lanarkshire Service, local charities and energy suppliers, all working together to help those in the greatest need.

“The last few years have brought unprecedented challenges for many people in our communities.

“These include ongoing recovery from the pandemic, the cost-of-living crisis, rising energy costs, fuel increases and the highest inflation in 40 years.

“But we remain 100% committed to tackling poverty and doing everything possible to support our most disadvantaged residents and communities.

The Tackling Poverty Team in North Lanarkshire can offer one-to-one debt advice, a range of self-help materials, and details of other organisations and websites that you may find helpful. A welfare rights service with information and advice on social security-related benefits is offered including:

  • Help to complete claim forms
  • Benefit checks
  • Support and representation service to people who refused benefits or wish to appeal their claim
  • Debt support, including mortgage, rent council tax arrears, household bills and credit or catalogue debts
