We have invested £450,000 with community groups, churches and other organisations that have been providing warm, welcoming places for people to use to meet friends or just get out of the house for a while. This is in addition to the council venues available to the public across the region.

Thousands of people have been benefiting from the centres since they opened in November last year, with the majority offering free coffee and tea, while some offer food.

One person, who uses the drop-in centre in Salsburgh, but didn't want to be named, said: "The centre has made such a difference to my life, it's a real highlight of my week and I look forward to going and meeting my friends. The volunteers are amazing and make us feel so welcome - I can't thank them enough."

Councillor Geraldine Woods, Convener of the Wellbeing and Tackling Poverty Committee, visited the centre in Salsburgh recently. 

She said: “It was great to see the difference the drop-in centres are making to the lives of so many people. The centres provide those attending them with warmth, a friendly cuppa, advice, support, or simply the opportunity to enjoy some time away from their home. 

“I’d encourage other people to consider visiting their local venue and finding out about the support that’s available – they really are friendly and welcoming to all.”
