Ten new community clean up hubs have been set up across North Lanarkshire to support local litter picking activities.
Local community groups have formed the hubs in partnership with Keep Scotland Beautiful (KSB) to provide litter picking equipment for anyone who wants to organise a litter pick. This includes bags, high-vis jackets, litter sticks, kit for children, posters and promotional materials.
A total of 19 hubs are now operational in North Lanarkshire and details are on KSB’s web site at Clean Up Scotland Map
During the KSB annual Spring Clean campaign, 100 litter picks were carried out by local groups across North Lanarkshire, contributing to more than 280 tonnes of litter collected across Scotland.
Hilltop Primary School in Airdrie collected 65 bags of litter along Petersburn Road to win the Glasgow and Strathclyde category in KSB’s Litter League initiative aimed at getting children more involved in the litter issue across the country. The school also finished second in the national category.
“Thank you to everyone who took part in litter picks across North Lanarkshire, and to the groups who have established community litter hubs to co-ordinate local efforts,” said Councillor Helen Loughran, Convener of the Environment and Climate Change Committee.
“The council carries out street cleaning work every day in towns and villages, on road verges, in parks and housing areas, and the efforts of residents organising community litter picks makes a real contribution to keeping our communities clean and tidy for everyone.”
The council can also provide equipment and uplift bags for community litter picks: contact GroundsMaintenance@northlan.gov.uk to submit a request.
