Our Tenant Sustainment Policy sets out our proactive approach to tenant sustainment, and we’re asking tenants to seek help and advice as early as possible to allow us to put support and referrals in place and reduce housing crisis. 

The policy aims to: minimise tenancy breakdowns, evictions, and abandonments; prevent housing crisis and homelessness; improve the health and wellbeing of people in our communities; promote stable and sustainable communities; improve inclusion and tackle inequalities and reduce void levels, void rent loss and associated costs.

“We work closely with our tenants from the moment they sign a tenancy agreement with us,” explained Councillor Heather Brannan-McVey, Housing Committee Convener. “From the first steps, we identify any potential vulnerabilities or sustainment issues and intervene early to ensure support is in place to stop tenants and their families from being at risk of losing their tenancy and becoming homeless. 

“The cost of living crisis is impacting on tenants and families, many of whom may never have been in the position of looking for assistance, and we would urge anyone who is worried or maybe a bit behind with their rent, not to put off getting in touch. Together with our networks and partnerships we have access to a range of referral routes and services to help tenants. 

“We know the risks that can cause tenancy issues, for example, households with additional support needs or people who are isolated and lonely, and families experiencing domestic abuse or young people just moving in to their first home. Whatever the issue, we can provide information and support to help people and families across North Lanarkshire’s communities to remain in their homes.”
