Residents of 20 blocks of flats in Coatbridge are already feeling the benefits following the completion of an ambitious energy efficiency refurbishment project.
The extensive work included the installation of cavity wall insulation, external wall insulation, heat recovery units, solar PV systems and new roofing, delivering substantial improvements in energy efficiency.
In addition to the energy efficiency works, the refurbishment project also enhanced the homes by safeguarding their distinctive architectural character.
The work took place on properties at Bank Street, Langloan Street, Langloan Place, Kirkwood Street and Langloan Crescent.
Gerry McWilliams, Project Manager (NLC) added: “One of the challenges arising during this project was preserving the distinctive look of the flats, which have distinctive red brick facades. Collaborating with the Procast Group and Struchtherm, resulted in the first use of Struchterm’s innovative ArtBrick (TM) system within North Lanarkshire. This replicated the red brick finish while allowing essential external wall insulation, retaining the look of the properties and was a real success.”
Key benefits include:
-
A reduction of up to 35% in energy bills thanks to comprehensive external wall insulation minimising heat loss
-
Lower carbon emissions, supporting our climate goals
-
Improved indoor comfort for tenants with stable, consistent temperatures year-round
-
Generation of clean electricity via solar PV systems, providing free daytime power
-
Elimination of condensation and mould through improved thermal performance
-
Prolonged building lifespan, and
-
Modernised appearance, maintaining the architectural heritage of the building and area.
Housing Convener, Councillor Michael McPake visited the properties to look at the improvements and met one of the tenants. Councillor McPake added: “We’re committed to making our homes more energy efficient and the Langloan refurbishment is just one example of how we’re using a range of innovative measures to reduce our carbon footprint and make our tenants more comfortable in their homes. This project balances energy efficiency with heritage preservation, creating sustainable, comfortable homes that remain true to their original character.”
Local resident, Mrs McMullen is delighted with the works. She said: “I am so pleased with the works and the other residents living in the block feel the same. People have passed in the street and have positively commented on how good the building looks. The workers were first class and I’m looking forward to seeing the difference the renovations make.”
