Our Housing Committee approved new, and updated sites identified for inclusion in our council house building programme.

We’re progressing the roll out of our ambitious new build programme to deliver 5,000 new homes by 2035 and continue to identify and assess new sites to ensure we have an adequate supply to facilitate construction.

Considered for future development is the site of the former Muirpark Care Home, Laburnum Road, Viewpark – approximately 25 homes and the conversion of current office accommodation at the site of Coats House, Gartlea Road, Airdrie – approximately 25 flats.

These will be added to the programme subject to the conclusion of detailed ground investigations,
full title checks and appropriate statutory consents.

It was also agreed to progress the ‘off the shelf’ purchase of up to 26 new three-bedroom terraced homes at Calder Gardens, Coatbridge from Barratt Homes.

Committee also agreed to the removal of three sites under consideration. Calderigg Place, Airdrie, due to unfavourable ground conditions and the sites at Macarthur Avenue, Glenmavis and Mabel Street, Motherwell, due to surface water connection issues. Should conditions change in the future, the sites will be revisited and reconsidered for inclusion in the programme.

To date, we’ve completed 1,263 homes with a further 348 under construction and project to complete a further 334 at the end of the financial year (23/24).

Housing Convener, Councillor Michael McPake, said: “We’re making good progress in delivering our new council homes and increasing the number of homes we have available for rent across the area. As part of this programme we continue to review and assess sites for their suitability and overcome challenges that this may present.

“Our new homes help transform empty or derelict sites to regenerate local communities and town centres, provide jobs locally and support business while meeting the needs and aspirations of our tenants now and in the future. We’re committed to achieving our ambition of making North Lanarkshire the place to live.”
