The Royal Regiment of Scotland (SCOTS) will be recognised for their outstanding dedication and contribution to serving their country by receiving the freedom of North Lanarkshire.

A motion was proposed at a meeting of the full council by Councillor Sandy Watson, seconded by leader of the council Jim Logue and agreed by cross-party elected members.

The Royal Regiment of Scotland (SCOTS) is the senior line infantry of the British Army. Formed on 28 March 2006, it was founded on the fighting heritage of historical Scottish Infantry Regiments.

The historical regiments of the Royal Regiment of Scotland (SCOTS) were Royal Scots, Royal Highland Fusiliers, King’s Own Scottish Borderers, Black Watch, The Highlanders (Seaforth, Gordons and Camerons), The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, 2/51 Lowland Volunteers and 2/51 Highland Volunteers.

Councillor Watson said: “Lanarkshire is an area well-known for supporting the Armed Forces and the Royal Regiment of Scotland has a long and proud history associated with our communities.

“Many residents from within our towns and villages will have either served themselves with the SCOTS, or had friends or family who were part of the Regiment. It is therefore fitting that we acknowledge their contribution and bravery for helping to protect our way of life by granting them the freedom of the area.”

Councillor Logue added: “I am delighted we will be able to bestow this formal recognition for the outstanding professionalism and service of the Royal Regiment on behalf of the people of North Lanarkshire. The granting of the freedom of North Lanarkshire allows us to express our gratitude and respect for the courage shown by our armed forces personnel.”

The formal marking and celebration of this honour will be announced in the coming months.
