The Whifflet community in Coatbridge has proudly relaunched its annual Burns Competition to celebrate Robert Burns Day.
Five local primary schools—Kirkshaws, St. Mary’s, St. Timothy’s, Shawhead, and St. Bernard’s—participated in the event, with pupils from Primary 4 to Primary 7 competing in verse speaking and singing.
This year, Kirkshaws Primary School hosted the competition, marking the start of a new tradition where each school will take turns to organise the event.
Special thanks go to Councillor Hughes and Mr Jim Wilson from the former Whifflet Burns Club, whose efforts helped bring back this cherished competition.
Thanks also to all the schools and pupils who took part with enthusiasm and pride.
Two special trophies were awarded in memory of Ronnie Wilson, a dedicated supporter of Robert Burns in the local area.
The singing trophy went to Charley Rose from St. Timothy’s Primary, while Charlotte from St. Mary’s Primary won the verse-speaking trophy.
The event was a great success and warmly received by the community.
