Zach Aitchison is reaching for the stars after being selected for a prestigious NASA programme in the United States.
The St Aidan’s HS pupil will take part in the prestigious event at NASA’s base in Houston, Texas.
He was chosen after attending the University of Strathclyde's week long residential programme for budding scientists.
The Space School, which takes place each June, drew over 1,000 applications from S5 pupils across Scotland, with only eighty making it through the selection process to attend the event in Glasgow.
Among the successful applicants were Zach and Joseph O'Hara from St Aidan's High School in Wishaw.
The programme is supported by NASA astronauts and engineers and offers pupils a unique educational experience to develop a deeper understanding of space and engineering.
At the end of the week, eight pupils from the Space School were chosen to take part in an educational trip to Houston, Texas, with Zach among the lucky few.
"I’ve never been to America. To get backstage access to one of the world's most interesting and innovative industries is truly a once in a lifetime opportunity. I’m beyond excited,” said Zach.
The trip to Houston includes a visit to NASA’s Johnson Space Centre where pupils will explore the Robotics Testing Area and the Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory.
The experience also features a visit to the Wings Over Houston air show, stargazing at the George Observatory as well as engagements with local universities and engineering companies.
Zach will also get to hear first-hand from NASA engineers and astronauts.
"The Space School has been an incredible experience for our students," said Claire Connelly, Head Teacher at St Aidan's High School. "We are really proud of Zach and Joseph for their achievements, and we are thrilled that Zach will be representing our school in Houston."
