Children from Primary 7 and nursery classes across North Lanarkshire marked the end of the school term by sharing their hopes for the future as part of a project celebrating the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

Pupils were invited to write their hopes and aspirations for the next 70 years on special seed paper which can be planted in gardens at school and home or in community areas.

The project, River of Hope, formed part of the national Jubilee celebrations in London earlier in June, and is designed to promote and encourage respect for the natural environment.

Lord Lieutenant for Lanarkshire Lady Susan Haughey joined pupils from St Brendan’s and Muirhouse Primary Schools to plant the seed papers.

“The River of Hope is an inspiring project for children across the UK and here in North Lanarkshire to think about their hopes for the future and create beautiful areas of wildflowers in their communities,” Lady Haughey said.

“By planting the seeds and seeing their flowers bloom, children will learn about the importance of nature for our environment, seeing how the flowers attract bees, butterflies and other insects as part of the local biodiversity.

“It is also a positive way for young children to play an active and lasting part in celebrating the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.”

Seed papers were given to all primary schools and nurseries in North Lanarkshire before the school holidays.
