Senior school pupils from across Lanarkshire have come together to show their support for suicide prevention, using sport to help break the stigma surrounding mental health.

Over 160 students from high schools in North and South Lanarkshire took part in football and netball tournaments at Ravenscraig Sports Centre on Wednesday, 26 February. The event was organised as part of both councils’ suicide prevention campaigns, aiming to encourage open conversations and raise awareness.

Attending the event with other local councillors, Provost Kenneth Duffy said: “It was inspiring to see so many young people take part in this important event. Sport has a unique way of bringing people together, and this tournament helped reinforce the message that no one should face their struggles alone.

“Pressures such as social media, schoolwork, and personal challenges can take a toll on mental health, but support is available. By encouraging open conversations, we can all play a role in suicide prevention.”

Calderhead High School won the netball competition, while Lesmahagow High School claimed victory in the football tournament.
