School pupils got hands-on construction experience at a special event to provide a platform for future careers development. Organised by our NL Academies team, the Build Your Future sessions aimed to provide practical insights and skills for future career development
The S2 and S3 students from Bellshill Academy and Cardinal Newman were treated to an immersive timber wall demonstration courtesy of Candid Construction Scotland. This event, held at Bellshill Academy offered insights into timber construction techniques, allowing the young people to explore the craft firsthand.
Following the timber wall demonstration, the pupils had the opportunity to explore the cutting-edge technology of drones in construction through a workshop led by Skills Development Scotland on behalf of Balfour Beatty. This engaging session equipped attendees with practical knowledge and skills, preparing them for the evolving landscape of built environment technology.
Attending the skills development sessions, Councillor Angela Campbell, Convener of Education said: "This type of practical, industry-led learning provides our pupils with a unique opportunity to gain essential skills and experience in the construction sector.
“Initiatives like this are crucial in nurturing the next generation of builders and innovators and I am delighted that our Brighter Futures team are putting these opportunities in place for our school pupils.”
The event was organised in partnership with Candid Construction Scotland, Skills Development Scotland, Balfour Beatty and supported by HUB South West and Scottish Traditional Building Forum.
Jocelyne Fleming, Trustee of Scottish Traditional Building Forum, said "The Scottish Traditional Building Forum is delighted to work with North Lanarkshire Council to raise the profile of the diverse range of career options in the construction sector to local students so they can make an informed choice about their future careers. We look forward to developing a long-term sustainable model for the benefit of the young people in the area."
