Councillor Agnes Magowan has tendered her resignation as Provost to the chief executive of North Lanarkshire Council today (Tuesday 9 August 2022).
A progressively worsening illness in a close family member has meant that Councillor Magowan is no longer able to fulfil the duties of Provost, which require extensive time away from home in evenings and weekends.
Councillor Magowan said: “It is with a very heavy heart that I have been compelled to write to the chief executive today to tender my resignation. It was such a huge honour to be elected Provost and to represent all the people of North Lanarkshire. The welcome I have had from individuals and groups across the area as I have helped them celebrate their achievements has been fantastic.
“However, I am unable to dedicate the time required to these duties while also fulfilling my responsibilities to my family in very difficult circumstances.
“Whoever succeeds me will be privileged to carry out the role and I wish my successor the very best.”
The Depute Provost, Councillor Anne Thomas, will carry out the Provost’s duties until a new Provost is elected in due course. While a council meeting is scheduled to take place on Thursday August 11, the requirements of the relevant legislation in respect of adequate notice mean that the position cannot be filled at that meeting. A further council meeting will be arranged as soon as is practicable to elect a new Provost.
