A recent inspection by Education Scotland praised Portland High School for its strong relationships with pupils and families and its success in preparing young people for further education and employment.
Inspectors visited the school in December 2024, speaking with parents, carers, and pupils while working closely with staff and senior leaders at the school.
They found that teachers were highly responsive to students' needs and worked effectively with local community partners to provide valuable learning experiences.
The school’s ‘Developing the Young Workforce’ initiative was particularly commended, with all school leavers in 2024 successfully moving on to further education, training, or employment.
Headteacher Laura McFarlane welcomed the findings and said the school would build on its strengths while addressing areas for improvement.
"I am delighted that the inspection team recognised the positive relationships we have with our young people and families, as well as our strong partnerships with the wider community.
"We are proud of the progress our students are making, and we will continue to focus on providing the best possible learning experiences for them," she said.
Councillor Michael McBride, Convener of Education, Children and Families praised the school’s commitment to its students.
"Portland High School plays a vital role in supporting young people in our community.
"It is fantastic to see the positive relationships staff have built with students and families.
"The council will continue to work with the school to build on this success and ensure every young person has access to high-quality learning and the support they need to thrive," he said.
The report also highlighted areas for development, encouraging senior leaders to explore new ways to support full-time attendance and ensure consistently high-quality learning experiences across all subjects.
It also recommended continued efforts to raise attainment at all levels.
Inspectors rated the school as satisfactory in learning, teaching, assessment, and raising attainment and achievement.
