Talented young people were celebrated at a special awards ceremony on Friday 9 August, marking the conclusion of our successful summer 2024 work placement programme.
The six-week paid placements form part of our One Workforce Plan and Brighter Futures Programme, which prepares young people to become the workforce of tomorrow. The placements provide practical experience to prepare the students for future employment and address workforce challenges in traditionally hard-to-recruit areas.
The event at the Ravenscraig Regional Sports Facility recognised the hard work and endeavours of 128 students from local high schools, priority groups and New College Lanarkshire.
Students enjoyed placements in key sectors this year, including the Built Environment, Health & Social Care, Digital Technology, NHS Lanarkshire, external construction companies, and various council services.
Provost Kenneth Duffy, who presented the students with their awards, explained, "The enthusiasm and commitment shown by these young people has been truly inspiring. Their contributions over the summer have been invaluable, and they should be extremely proud of their achievements.
"Investing in our next-generation workforce is crucial for supporting North Lanarkshire's growing economy. These placements offer students a positive introduction to the world of work, equipping them with essential skills and fostering teamwork.
"I would also like to thank the outstanding staff in our People Resources team who have worked tirelessly to put this innovative programme together and to support our young people every step of the way through this journey."
Fiona Whittaker, Chief Officer (People Resources) said: "This programme has been a remarkable success, and we are excited to continue its growth. Welcoming such a talented and enthusiastic group of young people into the workplace has been a rewarding experience for everyone. Investing in our next-generation workforce is essential for building a strong, vibrant community.
"The placement scheme was created to inspire and inform our young people about the many different career opportunities within the council and health services, and thanks to the support of local businesses, this has been expanded to include opportunities within the private sector. These real-life experiences will give our young people and invaluable head start in securing future job opportunities.
"The awards ceremony not only celebrated the students' achievements but also highlights the importance of hands-on experience in shaping the future workforce. Many participants have already secured sessional contracts, demonstrating the programme's success in leading to employment opportunities."
