Children and families in Newmains have welcomed the official opening of an exciting new play area in the village.
The facility sits next to the Newmains & St Brigid’s Community Hub and children from both schools, who were involved in the play area's design, came along to celebrate the official opening.
More than 50 local people attended and enjoyed the event including primary and nursery children and the wider community.
The park was officially opened by Keris Conner the Newmains Gala Queen.
Depute Leader of North Lanarkshire Council, Louise Roarty, the Convener of Communities, Kenneth Stevenson, and Police Inspector Gail Nicol also attended, along with representatives of the Community Council and the Newmains Community Trust.
The Community Partnership Team developed the programme, working closely with Newmains & District Community Council and pupils from the two local primary schools.
The facility includes a magnificent castle-themed climbing unit, a toddler climbing unit, an accessible roundabout and trampoline, a large set of varying swings including a basket swing, and a popular cable way.
New benches have also been installed to create a seating area for adults and families to enjoy the park.
Funding of £175,000 came from the Local Development Programme, which is managed by the council’s Community Partnership Team.
The play area sign was designed by Lena & Nathan Dzigda of St Brigid’s Primary School, who won the ‘Design-a-Sign’ competition, and Callan McLaughlan of Newmains Primary School contributed to the name of the park.
Councillor Louise Roarty expressed her enthusiasm for the new facility, saying, “Well done to these children for doing such a great job ensuring that the artwork reflects the theme of the play area.
“We are sure the children and young people of Newmains will enjoy the use of this facility for many years to come.
“This new play area is a fantastic addition to our community. It’s wonderful to see the children’s ideas come to life and provide a space where they can play and create memories.”
Councillor Kenneth Stevenson, Convener of Communities added, “The collaborative effort between the schools, community council, and the Community Partnership Team has resulted in a play area that will be cherished by the community.
“It’s a testament to what we can achieve when everyone works together.”
The official opening took place on Monday 20 May 2024.
