People in Overtown have welcomed the opening of a new outdoor gym within the community park.
The exercise facility, which is free to use, sits next to the Overtown Community Centre and is a welcome addition to the existing play park, skate park and dog walking area.
Pupils from Clyde Valley High and Orchard Primary Schools, representatives of Overtown Brighter Village Association, and other local people attended a special event to try out the new equipment.
Vicki Peacock, Community Partnership Officer, explained: “The Community Partnership Team worked closely with Overtown Brighter Village Association to develop the project.
“The new outdoor gym includes 12 pieces of high-tech, durable exercise equipment, including a spinning bike, elliptical trainer, hydraulic squat, chest press, pendulum and twister, abs bench, and more. The gym is installed on state-of-the-art wetpour surfacing for safer training and colourful zones.
“It was designed for people of all ages from the local community to improve their mental and physical health and wellbeing – most of the equipment was designed for people with poor mobility and low strength.”
Nancy Kerr, chair of the Overtown Brighter Village Association, added, “The people of Overtown are so happy to have this gym, and it is great to see people of all ages using it."
The project was supported by £45,000 of funding from the Local Development Programme, managed by the council’s Community Partnership Team.
