Children have welcomed the opening of a new multi-use games area (MUGA) located on Frankfield Road, Cardowan.
The project was developed in partnership with Cardowan Community Meadow and children from St. Joseph’s and Stepps Primary Schools, who suggested transforming an unused red blaes pitch into a dedicated sports facility.
Councillor Geraldine Woods, Convener of Communities, said: “Our Community Partnership Team recently held an event to celebrate the official opening of the new Cardowan MUGA.
"This fantastic new facility is a great example of how we can work with local communities to create spaces that truly benefit young people.
"It was great to hear about how engaged the pupils were in shaping this project, and their enthusiasm for the finished MUGA shows how valuable it will be. I am delighted that we could deliver this for the community.”
The £107,000 project was funded through the council's Local Development Programme.
At the official opening, children from both schools received goody bags from the contractor, Kompan.
Pupils then cut the ceremonial ribbon before enjoying football and basketball games together.
Further local consultation has since taken place, and plans to establish an outdoor gym next to the MUGA to encourage health and well-being in the community are underway.
The team will also install solar lighting on the nearby path linking Frankfield Road and Balmore Crescent to improve safety.
