We're offering a beginner lipreading and communication group for anyone with hearing loss and for whom spoken English is the preferred way of communicating.
The group will run each Friday from 10 am to 12 noon from the Bellshill Cultural Centre
Elaine O’Hara, who works as a CLD Adult Learning Worker for the Bellshill area, is organising the sessions. She's a qualified lipreading tutor and is also hearing impaired.
Elaine said: “People can join anytime from that date as they can learn from where they start. It is not like learning another language where if you miss the start, it’s difficult to catch up so this should not put people off.
“We practice through activities, fun stories, games, and quizzes. No one is put under pressure or on the spot and it follows a format of watching things being said without voice, with voice, written up, and without a voice again to ensure everyone can follow. Learners are not tested but encouraged to join in.
“We also learn BSL fingerspelling, and problem-solving, share tips and ideas, discuss equipment, and support services and have occasional agency visits.
“As you will be aware many people living with hearing loss can withdraw and become isolated, therefore, I am keen to make as many people as possible aware of the opportunity and benefits of coming along.”
Those interested in the course must live in or work in North Lanarkshire area.
