Tenants are now enjoying their new homes for rent in Stepps thanks to an ‘off the shelf’ partnership project with Barratt West Scotland.

The ‘off the shelf’ purchase of 30 new homes, under our Affordable Housing Policy within the Northern Corridor, forms part of our new council house programme and our commitment to deliver 5,000 new homes by 2035.

The new housing mix at Buttercup Crescent and Gateside Road comprises: 4 one-bedroom cottage flats; 8 two-bedroom cottage flats; 10 two-bedroom houses and 8 three-bedroom houses.

The development has links to a great road network with nearby access to the A80 and M80 and public transport links to Chryston, Moddiesburn and Glasgow. Local schools and shops are also within a short walk.

An event took place to mark the completion of the project with new tenant, Mrs. Shaw, welcoming visitors to see her new home. Attending were: Housing Convener, Councillor Michael McPake; Local Councillor, John McLaren; James Stevenson (Housing Development Manager); Stephen Llewellyn (Chief Officer – Housing Management); Bob Brownlie (Local Area Manager); Amy Docherty (Project Manager) and Gavin Ansari (Project Development Co-Ordinator – all from NLC. Barratt attendees included: Stuart Dodson (Development Director); Duncan Bertram (Land Manager); Mark Dwyer (Site Manager); Craig McFarlane (Construction Director) and John Graham (Contracts Manager).

Housing Convener, Councillor Michael McPake, said: Working with housing developers and buying new ‘off the shelf’ properties is just one of the ways we provide modern, affordable homes for our tenants. From the outset, we discuss the specification of our new homes ensuring they are built to include our accessibility and sustainability standards.

“This approach is in addition to our traditional design and build method and supplements our ambitious plans to build over 5,000 new homes. This project is an excellent example of how we’re successfully working with developers to deliver high quality homes to benefit our communities and the local economy.”

David Scott, Managing Director of Barratt and David Wilson Homes West Scotland, said: “Partnering with North Lanarkshire Council on this ‘off the shelf’ project further demonstrates our commitment to providing affordable, high quality homes across Scotland. The development is a fantastic mix of cottage flats and houses with excellent motorway and public transport links and we’re thrilled to see tenants settling into their new homes already. We’re incredibly proud to have contributed to the programme, which will make such a difference within the local community.”

The project cost was £4.8m with support from the Scottish Government of £2.376m, by way of grant funding.
