North Lanarkshire's Provost, staff, pupils, community representatives and local councillors gather to celebrate 150 years of Morningside Primary, Wishaw.

A celebration event took place today (Monday 26th of February), marking 150 years since the first school intake was recorded.

Provost, Councillor Kenneth Duffy, cut a ceremonial ribbon marking the momentous milestone and an exciting new chapter for the school.

For 150 years the school has played a key role in shaping the lives of generations of pupils in Morningside and beyond and forged strong links with its local community.

This sense of local community was evident on the day as former head teachers, teachers, support staff, the oldest known former pupils, church representatives and many others gathered to reminisce and share their memories of Morningside Primary over the years.

North Lanarkshire Provost, Councillor Kenneth Duffy, carried out a ceremonial ribbon-cutting representing the beginning of another exciting chapter in the school’s history. Provost Duffy said: “It was a pleasure being part of Morningside Primary’s celebration of 150 years of schooling and being a focal point in the local community.

“It was fascinating to hear more of Morningside’s story and the recollections of members of the community who shared their memories. It’s also exciting for pupils to know that their school is steeped in history and that they are the next generation of students to learn here. I hope they enjoy marking their special anniversary.”

George Stathis, Acting Principal Teacher and Anniversary Committee Lead added: “As part of our celebrations from February to summer, the school plans various events. These include class topics covering different decades, video messages and producing a story book. A special summer event will cover games over the decades, have photo booths with props from different eras, performances, BBQ and tearoom. All of these acknowledge the achievements and memories that have shaped the school into the pillar of education and community it is today.

“Everyone associated with the school is extremely proud to be part of this event which also serves as a reaffirmation of the strong bonds that define the school. We’ve so many reasons to celebrate!”
