North Lanarkshire is joining individuals and organisations around the world to celebrate International Women’s Day on 8 March and encourage everyone to #BreakTheBias.

The 2022 campaign message is: Imagine a gender equal world. A world free of bias, stereotypes, and discrimination. A world that is diverse, equitable, and inclusive. A world where difference is valued and celebrated. Together we can forge women's equality. Collectively we can all #BreakTheBias.

Across the area events and activities are taking place organised by our Community Learning and Development Team including workshops on topics such as crafts, British Sign Language, science and advances in technology and digital communications, and involving discussions about equalities and women’s achievements.

Members of the Scottish Youth Parliament are making a video about women who inspire them, and a group of international women in business are holding a meeting to discuss the theme of International Women’s Day.

At Coatbridge Community Centre there's a session on silk painting and lino printing inspired by a Ukrainian artist, Maria Prymachenko.

On 8 March, Lanarkshire Women in Business launch their next programme of events which are headlined by inspiring female speakers and industry experts, giving their time to ensure the flag for enterprising ambition flies high among Lanarkshire’s female population.

The council will be participating in the Scottish Women’s Budget Group Gender Budgeting Project, which aims to support greater use of gender budgeting tools in local decision making in Scotland to reduce inequalities.

Research into the impact of Covid-19 on women shows that, without action, the pandemic has the potential to reverse gender equality gains and reinforce women’s pre-existing inequality. This project will improve understanding of gender budgeting processes and embed them into the council’s decisions to help shape social and economic recovery that delivers a fairer and stronger local economy.

“In all our communities there are wonderful examples of innovation, support, leadership, friendship, skills and ambition among women, and International Women’s Day is an opportunity to recognise and celebrate that,” said Councillor Heather Brannan-McVey, the council's Equalities Champion.

“This year’s theme of #BreakTheBias shows us that by working together we can make a difference, make society better, more equitable and inclusive.

“Our thoughts are particularly with the women of Ukraine who are experiencing such pain and loss just now, and it is inspiring to see so many people across the world, including Scotland, reaching out to help them with accommodation, food, clothing and medical supplies.

“Here in North Lanarkshire, the council continues to work to ensure local services and facilities are fair and inclusive, meeting the needs of everyone in our communities, and supporting women to achieve their ambitions and reach their potential in all walks of life.”
