Lee Murray, from Craigneuk in Wishaw, has been hailed as a hero after he rescued his neighbour from a raging house fire.
The incident occurred a few years ago, but Lee's actions continue to inspire those who hear his story and Provost Kenneth Duffy felt that some form of recognition was needed.
When the fire broke out in his neighbour’s home, Lee did not hesitate to act. Despite the danger to his own life, he rushed into the burning building and pulled his neighbour, Joe, to safety.
Speaking about the incident, Lee Murray said, "I didn't really think about it at the time, I just knew I had to do something to help Joe. I'm just glad I was able to get him out of there before it was too late."
Provost Kenneth Duffy expressed his gratitude for Lee's actions in a letter: “I want to thank you for your bravery and selflessness. You have set an incredible example for others to follow, and we are all proud to have you as a member of our community."
Lee's quick thinking and selfless actions have earned him the respect of his peers and family, as well as the wider community.
He believes that his first aid training, received as part of his Sports Leadership Award, played a crucial role in his ability to respond to the emergency. Lee's experience highlights the importance of learning basic first-aid skills, which can be invaluable in such situations.
Provost Duffy concluded: “Lee’s bravery and selflessness serve as a shining example of what it means to put others first and we commend him for his incredible actions and wish him all the best for his future.”
