Those worried about feeling lonely and vulnerable this festive season are being offered practical tips and advice to beat the winter blues.

The council has launched a festive guide aimed at those who may be suffering from anxiety, low mood or depression during the holiday period.

The ‘Surviving Christmas’ booklet, produced in partnership with NHS Lanarkshire, contains information to help people manage difficult circumstances in their lives including debt, stress and loneliness.

Paul Kelly, Depute Leader said: “The festive period and winter months can be very stressful for some people, especially for those who may have poor mental health or those with financial worries and for people feeling lonely.

“With all the concerns this year with the cost-of-living crisis, it’s vital we all reach out to help those we care about. If you’re worried about someone, a friend, a family member or work colleague, asking them directly about their feelings can make such a difference.

“If someone you are close to shows signs of not being themselves, when changes in their behaviour begin to worry you, even if the signs come and go, it is vital to ask them about it.

“Talking openly about their feelings can help a person get clarity about what is troubling them.

“Our ‘Surviving Christmas’ guide provides practical advice for people who many need it and hopefully it will help with taking some of the stress out of the holiday period for those feeling under pressure."

The booklet contains contact details for emergency services during the winter, financial and benefits helplines, stress control advice, domestic abuse support and alcoholics anonymous. Practical tips on staying safe at home and on nights out are also included.

Local businesses, hospitals and organisations are supporting the initiative and will have copies of the help booklet.

If you do need help at any time, you should call Samaritans on 116 123 or Breathing Space 0800 83 85 87.
