Everything in the Drummond Drive retirement garden is rosy after Thornlie Primary school pupils work with tenants to deliver a fantastic summer garden project.

With expert advice from some of the residents, the green-fingered youngsters planted seeds and sunflowers to add summer colour to the garden area and helped tidy up the courtyard garden.

A new greenhouse was also added to the area, with resident Tom Muir working with the children to plant fruit trees which were donated by the local Co-op.

The P6 pupils began their project in May and worked one day every week up until the school summer holidays to complete it. Teacher, Deborah Kirkland, helped co-ordinate the garden project with her pupils which has seen the link with the school and retirement home flourish.

Odile Rae, Retirement Housing Officer, said: “It’s always great working with young people and we really enjoy their company. Thornlie Primary pupils came to Drummond Drive to perform a Christmas play last year and we’ve kept the connection going. They also supported our residents with iPad sessions and we’ve forged a very positive relationship with the school and its pupils.

“One of our residents, Tom Muir, who is Secretary of the Tenants & Residents Association at Drummond Drive, suggested the garden project. It was great to see the interaction between the generations and there were lots of laughs while the young people learned.

“The garden area looks great and it’s testament to the hard work of all involved.”

The pupils also designed a logo for the Tenant & Residents Association that could be used on its letterheads. A winning design was selected and a gift of a garden plaque, hand painted by pupil Eden Arbuckle was presented to Drummond Drive.

Resident Anne Weir added: “I really enjoyed working with the young people during the iPad sessions and also enjoyed spending time in the garden area with them.”
