The impressive sporting facilities at Airdrie Leisure Centre are set for a boost after a funding package of £1.5million was announced

The investment will see significant improvements to the centre’s outdoor athletics provision with new sports pitches and a new running track.

A full-size synthetic football pitch and a new four-lane 400 metre running track along with six 100 metre sprint lanes are being created.

The facilities will be floodlit and there will be improvements to the spectator area.

In addition, there will be a designated long and high jump area along with a new synthetic five-a-side pitch.

Councillor Jim Logue, Leader of North Lanarkshire Council, welcomed the news: “I’m delighted to announce that we’ve secured funding to make this major investment in Airdrie Leisure Centre.

“This investment will further enhance the excellent outdoor facilities including the outdoor gym, skatepark and play area.

“It will bring significant benefits for a wide range of the community by upgrading the current grass football pitch and replacing the recreational ash running track

“It will create more opportunities to improve the health and wellbeing within our communities.”

Work is expected to get underway later this month.
