Participants at a special suicide prevention football tournament have raised £432 to support the work of the Samaritans Scotland charity.

The cheque was presented by Provost Kenneth Duffy on behalf of North and South Lanarkshire Councils Suicide Prevention campaigns.

Provost Kenneth Duffy explained: "We were delighted to donate the funds raised by the tournament players to such a vital cause. Samaritans Scotland provide a crucial service to vulnerable people, and we are grateful for everyone’s support in this charity fundraiser.

"We are looking forward to organising the tournament again for next year, and we are extremely grateful to everyone who has played a role in supporting our mission to tackle suicide in our communities.”

Neil Mathers, Executive Director of Samaritans Scotland, said: “There have been 501 probable suicides across Lanarkshire in the last five years. Every life lost is a tragedy and the suicide prevention work being led by North and South Lanarkshire councils is crucial.

“It is encouraging that so many local people, businesses, organisations and schools took part in the recent 7-a-side football tournament at Ravenscraig – we know that events such as this really encourage people to take that all-important first step in seeking help.

“Samaritans Scotland volunteers answer a call for help every 10 seconds, and the money raised on the day will help them to continue to be available 24-7 to those that need them most. Thank you to everyone who made a contribution.”

For individuals concerned about suicide, or those at risk someone who may be at risk, Samaritans can be reached by calling 116 123, and Breathing Space is available at 0800 83 85 87.
