Events spotlight pathways to self-employment for women

A series of industry focused start-up events designed to help North Lanarkshire women explore different pathways to self-employment will begin this month.

The first event takes place at North Lanarkshire’s new women’s business incubator, The HIVE, based in Airdrie, on Monday 17 June from 11.00am to 1.00pm.

Headlined by Jenny and Kate, founders of The Academy and Urban Retreat based in Cumbernauld, the event will focus on the beauty and wellbeing industry.

The duo will share their business journey and provide inspiration and advice to budding beauty and wellbeing practitioners.

There will also be an opportunity to gain practical advice on insurance and the importance of self-care for new therapists getting started. 

Attendees will learn about:

  • beauty and wellbeing disciplines suited to self-employment
  • how to become self-employed
  • start-up grant funding
  • free, then subsidised beauty treatment space available, and
  • 121 business advice, coaching and mentoring support.

Yvonne Weir, the council's Enterprise Manager, said: “The beauty and wellbeing sector is a lucrative one, worth £24.5 billion to the UK economy in 2022 (The British Beauty Council). It can offer good prospects and a flexible work-life balance for those that choose to pursue it. 

“By becoming self-employed there’s opportunity to work to meet your own personal and professional goals.

“Whether you are thinking about taking a course to qualify in a particular beauty or wellbeing discipline or you’re soon to qualify or recently qualified, this event with equip you with everything you need to get started working for yourself.”

Further events will take place at The HIVE from August to December 2024, with a focus on pathways to self-employment in childminding, digital, healthcare, food and drink and the creative Industries.
