Pupils from Newmains and St Brigid’s primary schools along with children from Newmains Family Learning Centre and Newmains nursery planted trees on the site of their new campus, which is set to open early next year.

The event, which took place on Monday 5 December, also marked national tree planting week – the UK’s largest annual tree celebration.

Pupils planted two apple and one damson plum trees in the new nursery’s outdoor play area.

Annie Guthrie a pupil at Newmains PS, said: “I’m so excited to move into my new school, I think it will be big and bright and I want to use the slide.

Tommy McGuinnes a pupil at St. Brigid’s PS, added: “I can’t wait to use all the playground equipment like the treehouse, slide and football pitches.”

Cllr Angela Campbell, Convener of Education, Children and Families, said: “It was lovely meeting pupils and staff and seeing how excited they are about the new community hub. It looks very impressive and will be a superb facility for young people and the wider community alike.”

Each year as part of national tree planting week, the country’s conservation sector, volunteer groups and tree-lovers come together to plant thousands of trees to mark the start of the annual tree planting season.
