An area of derelict land has been transformed into a community greenspace for residents in Moodiesburn.

Glenmanor Greenspace has been officially opened by the council, Green Action Trust, Northern Corridor Community Volunteers (NCCV) and Cloudberry Communities.

The initiative includes paths, seating and picnic tables, outdoor learning facilities and a play area surrounded by trees and planting.

We secured £230,000 from the Scottish Government’s Vacant and Derelict Land Investment Programme, with further support coming from the Placed Based Investment programme. North Lanarkshire Council worked with local community group NCCV, Glenmanor Primary School Parent Council and residents to develop plans for the former school site. The work was carried out by Mackenzie Construction Ltd.

Cloudberry Communities, a community interest company, have taken on a long-term lease of the site and will enhance the site and carry out ongoing maintenance.

“This project offers something for all ages, from a play area and learning space to seating for a catch up with friends and paths linking the community,” said Councillor Alex McVey, Convener of the council’s Enterprise and Fair Work Committee.

“It’s great to see what can be done when everyone works together, and I would like to thank everyone involved for creating this new greenspace for the community in Moodiesburn.”

Mike Batley, Development Officer at Green Action Trust said: “Seeing the completion of the Glenmanor Greenspace site is a real pleasure. Green Action Trust has had the privilege of working with a range of stakeholders to create a multifunctional space that benefits the local people of Moodiesburn—a great place to meet, an attractive short-cut through the trees, and a valuable children’s play space.

“The new outdoor teaching area and sensory path also make the space an important resource for the local school. We’ve had fantastic support throughout the project from the local community and all the partners and funders involved, and so the success at Glenmanor Greenspace is a great reflection of this collaborative partnership.”
