Tributes have been paid to former North Lanarkshire Education Convener Sir Charles Gray who sadly passed away at the weekend at the age of 94.
Sir Charles first became a councillor in 1958 with Lanark District Council. He was Leader of Strathclyde Region, before transferring to North Lanarkshire Council in 1995 where he was appointed convener of education. In 2007 he was awarded a knighthood for services to education.
Councillor Jim Logue, Leader of North Lanarkshire Council, said: “Sir Charles was a hugely influential figure in the labour movement both locally and nationally and a highly respected leader in local government.
“He leaves a lasting legacy and was instrumental in overseeing the transformation of much of the school estate, with the first of these – Caldercruix and Plains primaries – opening in 2006.
“My thoughts are with his family and friends at this sad time.”
